Restoring Wasp-OS to InfiniTime
A while back i bought a pinetime and wore it for a while before starting do play more with it, including at some point switching it over to wasp-os firmware in the hopes to use it for more things with the flexibility of micropython. Unfortunately wasp-os hasn’t seen any development in the last few years and it shows. Above all a single battery charge would only last me a day on wasp-os while i could for a week and a half with infinitime.
I got distracted by other projects and so my pinetime mostly lived on my shelf until i pulled it back out today with the intention to return to InfiniTime.
Unfortunately i faced a few challenges due to the age of the documentation and wasp-os so here is a short summary of how i managed to return to InfiniTime. The ususal disclaimer applies, i have written this to the best of my possibiliy but if you brick your watch, it catches fire or starts a zombie apocalypse i can’t be held liable. Anyway here is how to return to InifiTime:
First of all, fully charge your PineTime so it doesn’t die on you during flashing. Then you need the reloader-factory.zip from wasp-os. Unfortunately it has been pruned together with all release zips from their github so i did my own build. A link to the file is here. If you don’t trust me you can build it yourself from their repo
This file has been tested with a new pinetime with bootloader version v1.0.1 but should probably also work with v1.0.0
Unfortunately Gadgetbridge failed me here by refusing to send the zip to the watch, so the easiest way i found to flash the watch over bluetooth is a legacy version of the proprietary nRF Connect app. You can find it on their github, the lastest version that will still work is 4.24.3.
Install the apk on an android phone and download the reload-factory zip to it.
Then keep the button on your pinetime pressed until it goes into bootloader mode as indicated by a pinecone and a small bluetooth icon in the corner. Now launch nrf connect, you should see a device called pinedfu. Connect to it and use the small “dfu” button in the upper right corner. After that choose that you want to install a zip file and select the zip you just downloaded. It will get transferred to your PineTime and the watch should reboot into the InfiniTime bootloader.
Download the latest InfiniTime release to your phone. They are also on github. You need the file called pinetime-mcuboot-app-dfu-VERSIONNUMBER.zip
Now use nrf connect to connect back to your watch, it should be called InfiniTime now. Upload the zip the same way you did before. After that your watch should reboot back to InfiniTime firmware, mission accomplished.
